Stretching Shoes
Who knew I could use something from high school chemistry - that old water-expands-when-it-freezes business. Amazingly, this can actually be applied to the purposes of stretching shoes, as shown in the video. It's cheap, relatively easy, and can be done in less than a day.I have tried this method several times over the years and each time the shoes did stretch, although the results were slightly different each time. Certain materials and certain styles are more cooperative about stretching than others. But a few words of warning: stretching a pair of shoes - even when you get a cobbler to do it - always carries an element of risk. Leather will often stretch, but the polyester thread keeping the shoe together is generally much more reluctant. Splits, cracks, loss of shape, and discoloration can result from even the most careful and professional stretching attempt. Still, if the choice is between stretching the shoes or having them remain forever unworn, you may decide the potential risks are worth it. There is a popular method for stretching shoes that involves a hair dryer and a broom handle. Some people swear by this, but I shudder to even think about it. I would urge you to avoid this method. Shoes have several different adhesives holding them together, and all of these begin to break down when exposed to heat. You might end up stretching the shoes, but you also shorten their lifespan.
